Welcome to the Independence Middle School clinic. We would like to take this opportunity to familiarize you with the services we provide. With so many viruses and illnesses that our children are exposed to, here are several guidelines for parents regarding when to keep a sick child home.

These guidelines may help you make that decision. Your child SHOULD NOT come to school if he or she has:

  • A temperature of 100 degress or higher

  • Any vomiting or diarrhea within the last 24 hours

  • Eye Symptoms such as redness, itching, or purelent white or yellow drainage

  • Had lice or nits-until treated, nit-free and rechecked by the nurse

  • Chicken pox-until all areas are scabbed

There is a full time registered nurse and licensed practical nurse on duty in the clinic. The purpose of the clinic is to provide First Aid for School Related illnesses and injuries. We are neither equipped nor designed to take care of out of school injuries/illnesses, and are not intended to take the place of parent-directed medical care.

We will follow doctor's written orders for treatment which may need to be done during the time the student is in the school. Some students develop a pattern of very frequent clinic visits, missing important classroom instruction, assignments, and accumulating multiple class absences. If we find this occurring, we will contact you.

During the year your child will participate in several health screenings such as height, weight, hair, skin and teeth. Only seventh graders will have vision, hearing, and scoliosis screenings unless you have a concern about these.

It is a Virginia Beach School Board regulation that any student taking medication during school hours must have written permission from a doctor and a parent. No medication will be given without this doctor's order. This also includes all-over the counter medicines.

Medication should be brought directly to the clinic by the parent and MUST be in the original prescription bottle with the students' name, medicaiton name, and correct dosageon it. Medication brought in any other way will not be accepted nor given to the student. The clinic does not stock Tylenol or any over the counter medications. Telephone requests or written notes for administration of them will not be honored.

If you still have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us. Thank you for your cooperation.
