Reading Resource Lab

Independent Reading for Middle School Students

The Independent Reading lab serves students who have failed to meet the required score on SOL and Stanford 10 tests, as well as those students who are having difficulty in core subject area classes meeting the demands of the middle school curriculum in the area of reading. Students in Mrs. Baker’s reading lab participate in variety of reading activities designed to increase their reading skills and help develop strategies that will assist them in their core classes as well.

This year the reading lab has been updated with the newest version of the computer based program we use called Read 180 Enterprise Edition. This interactive individualized computer program works with students at their individual instructional levels. It focuses on reading comprehension, spelling and vocabulary instruction through a variety of activities. The highlight of this program is that students are able to receive immediate feedback on their success rates which is extremely motivating. Students receive further direct instruction using a variety of fiction and nonfiction selections that scaffolds the computer instruction.

Independent Reading for Middle School Students (LA 1128)Grades 6-8

Students are recommended for placement in this course based on multiple criteria which include results from prior Standards of Learning and other standardized testing. Students receive instruction in five key areas: phonological awareness and decoding, reading fluency and word recognition, vocabulary and phrase meanings, reading comprehension, and writing in response to text. The majority of the reading selections will be nonfiction to build student success in reading content-area textbooks. Sustained independent reading will be incorporated into the class to develop reading fluency. Students are expected to stay in this course for the entire year unless results from mid-year assessments indicate that the student is ready to exit the program.
