Meet Mrs. Beverly Weddle
IMS 2009-2010 Teacher of the Year

7th grade social studies teacher, Mrs. Beverly Weddle is the IMS 2009-2010 Teacher of the Year.

Nominee’s Thoughts on Teaching

I believe the duty of educators in a democratic society is to teach young people how to make responsible decisions.  In order to achieve that goal, students must learn how to learn.  Teachers should inspire students to go out and explore topics on their own and reach logical conclusions.  They must be able to articulate and defend those beliefs.  The ultimate goal of education is to produce hard-working, reliable citizens, regardless of the niche they discover for themselves.  These students are the young people that will be creating the shape of the world of tomorrow.

Nominee's Reflections on the Rewards of Teaching

The greatest rewards in teaching come not from the day to day lessons, but from the student success stories that come later.  When students become responsible adults and contributing members of society, I know I have succeeded.  The daily thank-yous, and the spontaneous testimonies students write in my “Dictionary of Weddle” are priceless, but the true measure of one’s education comes in the real world, with split-second decisions and daily responsibilities.  When I see former students walk across the commencement stage, when I see them working jobs, when they come back and visit and say they remember me, it is in those moments where I know definitively that my work has made a difference.
